Background
Not much is known about the small town of Portuna. No one knows its origins or even where it might be found on a map. Most of the residents don't even know how they arrived there. Most importantly, no one knows a way to leave. People have tried to find a way out, back to the worlds that they still remember coming from, but all have failed. All those who have traveled past the forest to the north, beyond the river to the east, over the mountains to the west, or across the ocean to the south has either returned with no success or been gone for so long they are presumed dead. The town itself presents no answers, and though each time someone new appears the site is searched thoroughly, there are no signs of any gateways or paths to their world.
Some people are still searching for a way to get out. These people often find that the world itself seems to be against them. Expeditions are delayed due to weather or pests infesting the supplies.People looking in town are unable to find the information they search for and find their results often either missing or completely incomprehensible. The longer you search for a way out, the less you remember why you were trying to leave in the first place.
Some people feel that if there is no way to leave, they may as well make the best life possible in Portuna. They get jobs and houses, attend school if they want, and try to live out their lives as best they can in this new and strange world. Some adapt to it easily while others struggle to make even basic ends meet.
In the past, some people have tried to attack others, causing them injury and sometimes attempting to kill them. In every situation, the attacker was suddenly stricken to the ground, paralyzed or somehow incapacitated before they could do much damage. The word soon spread that anyone who tries to hurt or kill another person will be paralyzed and confined to the hospital for at least two weeks. Anyone with devious intentions would have to find some other way to go at their enemy.
Site Plot
When people first arrive in Portuna, they fairly quickly are directed to the Welcome Center, where they are given a crash course in surviving the modern world and assigned housing based on the money they had on them when they arrived and they job they are qualified for and interested in having. If you have a better job, you get a better house. If you don't have the skills for a good job, you will probably end up in the apartments. The best houses are reserved for town leaders and anyone who happened to arrive with stacks of gold. Not everyone will get a job immediately, and some might try to live off the system, but characters are rewarded for trying to get a job and settle in.
Your character may be interested in just building a life for themselves in Portuna. Your character might be interested in continuing the search for a way home. They might also just be looking for revenge or to have fun. No matter what your character wants, it is clear that some greater force exists in Portuna, policing people until they behave in an acceptable way. Until people find out what is going on, they will never really be free.
